Learning vs. studying Latin

The distinction between studying Latin and learning Latin is highlighted in this article by Mark J. Clark, of Christendom College. I'm very much in agreement with Clarkabout the necessity of learning Latin as the key to our Catholic heritage and as an exercise in a significantly different way of thinking.

Section A: Members

A.1 The Sponsor
The Sponsor of the Dead Language Latin Club is the Greater Milwaukee Catholic Home Educators. The Sponsor is represented for the purposes of the Club by the Moderator, who is selected by the Sponsor in whatever manner the Sponsor’s leadership sees fit.

A.2 The Moderator(s)
Anything and everything is subject to the approval of the Moderator(s) of the Dead Language Latin Club, who may do, regulate, change or otherwise make decisions about anything and everything concerning the Dead Language Latin Club.

A.3 The Triumvirate
The Triumvirate will consist of the President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer which constitute the Executive Committee of the Club. The Triumvirate may delegate work to the Plebians The Triumvirate ought to consult with and listen to the ideas and concerns of the Plebians in all matters.

A.4 The Plebians
The plebians will consist of persons qualified according to the norms and standards of the club (see Section F) who have also attended a minimum of four meetings within the last 12 months. Plebians have the right to vote in all matters.

A.5 The Clientes
The Clientes will consist of persons who are qualified according to the norms and standards of the club (see Section F) but have not attended the required 4 meetings within the last 12 months. Clientes may vote in all matters but these:

a) In an Election
b) In any change to the Bylaws
c) For an Impeachment

A.5 Senators-for-Life
The Senators-for-Life will consist of former Triumvirate members who may share wisdom wherever it is needed. They are welcome to attend all meetings and events. If graduated, they may also attend State or National Conventions as Chaperones or as members of the WSCL.

A.6 Equites
The Equites will consist of former Members other than Senators-for-life. They are welcome to attend all meetings and events. If graduated, they may also attend State or National Conventions as Chaperones or as members of the WSCL.

A.7 The President
The President is the spearhead of the Triumvirate. He has the power to issue a Mandatum (see section B) in case of controversy. The ordinary work of the President is to direct the Club within the vision of the Sponsor. If there is any work to be delegated for one reason or another, it is the President’s job to take care of it by doing it or delegating it.

A.8 The Vice President
The Vice President is in charge of Spirit, and Outreach. The ordinary job of the Vice President is to head recruitment efforts and keep up and support the Spirit of the Club.

A.9 The Secretary/Treasurer
The Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for the taking of minutes and the keeping of the Treasury and any other communication which is required by the Triumvirate.

A.10 Ad Hoc Committees
Ad Hoc Committees may be created by the processes of section B for the purpose of advancing the mission of the Club. The President should appoint the members from the Plebians, the Triumvirate or the Moderator(s).

A.11 Non-executive Officers
Non-Executive officers are those that have no say in the Triumvirate, but have official duties. Positions and/or officers may be added by a Vote of all members of the Club present or absent (see Section B).

A.12 Historian
The Historian is the primary keeper of photographic records, digital and otherwise. It is the duty of the Historian to take pictures at all events, keep a scrapbook, and keep the Blog supplied with pictures. The Historian is a non-executive officer.

A.13 Tech-Coordinator/Blogger
The Tech-Coordinator/Blogger is responsible for the upkeep of the Blog, and for organizing any other technological needs of the Club. The Tech-Coordinator/Blogger is a non-executive officer.

A.14 Acting Officers
In the case that an officer is unable to perform his duties, an Acting Officer is appointed by the President to perform the duties of that officer until the President releases him. In the case that the officer in question is the President, the Vice President would temporarily assume the office of the President. The Acting President may then appoint a new Vice President.

Section B: The Vote and Mandatum

B.1 The Calling of a Vote
Should controversy arise in a regular meeting, the matter may be settled by a Vote. Any member can call a vote with the approval of the Sponsor.

B.2 The Power of a Vote
By means of a Vote any decisions concerning the Club may be made with this exception:
a) Sections A.1 and A.2 of the Bylaws may not be in any way changed.

B.3 The Process of a Vote
In case of a Vote, the votes of all members present are tallied. The proposal with the most votes is carried and will be implemented.

B.4 The Context of the Mandatum
Should controversy concerning the direction or running of the Club or meetings arise in the context of a Triumvirate Meeting, it may be settled by a Mandatum issued by the President with this exception:
a) The President may not issue a Mandatum concerning the mission of the Club.

B.5 The Power of a Mandatum
The President may decide anything concerning the direction of the Club or meetings by a Mandatum. This Mandatum must be obeyed by all members.

B.6 Quorum
In most cases, a quorum of 66% of the members is needed to call a vote. The Exceptions are these which require all members present and absent to have a vote:
a) In an Election
b) In any change to the Bylaws
c) For an Impeachment

B.7 Amendment of the Bylaws
A change in the Bylaws is only possible by a 66% majority Vote in accordance to Section B.6.

Section C: Elections and Depositions

C.1 The Time of Elections
The normal time for Elections is at the last Club meeting of the year.

C.2 The Power of Elections
Elections will determine which Club members will hold Triumvirate offices next year.

C.3 The Process of Elections
Speeches and Debates may be held on Election Day or via the Internet or E-mail. Time should be allotted for the Plebians to ask the Candidates questions. After this Elections are held as Votes with these exceptions:
a) A tied vote may not be settled by a Mandatum. In case of tie the winner is determined by a flip of a coin.
b) Votes should remain as confidential as possible.

C.4 Impeachment
By an 80% majority vote any member of the Triumvirate may be impeached. Elections should be held promptly.

C.5 Resignation
A member of the Triumvirate may resign from office at any time.

C.6 In Case of Impeachment or Resignation
In case of Resignation or Impeachment, an Acting Officer must be appointed according to Section A.14 until Elections are held.

Section D: The Treasury

D.1 Use of the Treasury
A decision concerning the use of the treasury funds are to be determined by unanimous consent of the Triumvirate in consultation with the Plebians and the Sponsor or by a vote by all members subject to the approval of the Sponsor. A Mandatum cannot be issued concerning fiscal management.

D.2 Sponsor’s Dues
The Club will pay the Sponsor’s yearly dues to the American Classical League.

Section E: Meetings

E.1 Regular Meetings
A Regular Meeting is one to which all members are invited and encouraged to attend.

E.2 Triumvirate Meetings
A Triumvirate meeting is one convened by the President to which only Triumvirate Members are invited and encouraged to attend. At least one other Triumvirate Member must be present.

E.3 The Meeting Process
The layout of any given Regular meeting will be determined by the Triumvirate upon consultation with and in light of the input of the Plebians and the Sponsor. The layout of any given Triumvirate Meeting will be determined by the President in light of the input of the other Triumvirate members.

E.4 Times and Locations
The times and locations of the Regular meetings will be determined by the Triumvirate in consultation with the Plebians and Sponsor. The times and locations of the Triumvirate Meetings will be determined by the Triumvirate.

Section F: The Dead Language Latin Club Norms and Standards

F. 1 Membership Qualifications
To become a Member of the Club, twelve U.S. dollars must be submitted as dues to the Sponsor. The applicant must be home schooled during the academic year in which membership is sought, in eighth grade or high school, and currently studying some form of the Classics with some Latin background. The home schooling status of the proposed member will be determined by the Sponsor.

F.2 Conduct Expectations
At meetings, no member is allowed to engage in disorderly conduct. Business Meetings, to the extent possible, will follow a modified version of parliamentary procedures as provided by the Sponsor. Disciplinary Action may only be enacted by Sponsor, parent or any legitimate Civil or Ecclesiastical Authority.

F.3 Catholicity
The Dead Language Latin Club is sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Catholic Home Educators; therefore its activities should directly or indirectly reflect the ideals of its patrons.

Another meeting of our glorious club will be held this Monday, November 9th at Dr. G's house. The meeting will commence at 6:30 PM, and will end around 8:00, hopefully with snacks after the meeting. Moderators’ Report

As everything Latin is going swimmingly, the Moderators had very little to report aside from their admiration of the promo-video created by E.Z., our esteemed Tech Coordinator. These sentiments being generally shared, he was applauded enthusiastically by the masses, which applause I second. Three cheers for E.Z.!!

To the great relief of the Secretary, the possibility of re-recording Agitabimus Te was mentioned.

President’s Report

The President, after pacing gravely back and forth, said to the Club in stirring tones, “Elections are nigh! Fight or fly! Lest you die!” The President encouraged all candidates to tell the group via e-mail what they intended to run for and how they would be beneficial for the club in that office.

Treasurer’s Report

The numbers being in de scrapbook, it was reported that the Club owed K.M. $30.00. Once paid, the Club Funds will be $26.02.

General Information

M.Z. has not been reimbursed for the Convention T-shirts. The conclusive list of Debtors will be published presently.

Elections will be held at the June Meeting, which will take place at the G’s. A bonfire will be lit, and members burned at the Moderators’ discretion.

C.G. will be drafting an amendment to the By-Laws to safeguard the 2¢ for posterity.

The Club will attend a Latin Mass at St. Stanislaus Church in Milwaukee on the 21^st of May.

Guest Speaker

The guest speaker, Mrs. Brauer, gave an edifying and informational talk about the anatomy of the Latin Mass.

By-Laws

Amendments to the By-Laws were voted on at this time. They were excellent, as are all the ordinances of our wise and gracious Triumvirate, and were universally accepted.

Moderators’ Report

Dr. Gotcher

In his report, Dr. Gotcher informed the masses that negotiations would be opened with Brookfield Academy concerning GMCHE joining them in a bout of Certamen. Another projected event is a barbeque and dance given by the Gotchers in honor of the Alumni. Both proposals were met with rousing cheers.

Mrs. VH

Mrs. VH has recently distinguished herself by being the first representative of the GMCHE to attend a meeting of the WJCL. The following topics were discussed:

· The convention is running out of space in its current quarters. As removal from the aforementioned quarters would be highly unnerving and traumatic, not to mention inconvenient, measures to reduce the size of the assembly will be taken, including: refusing admittance to teams from Illinois and (possibly) restricting attendance to high schoolers. Marquette offered, with touching chivalry, to stay at a nearby Madison hotel if needed.

· It was decided that members of the same school cannot sit next to each other during testing.

· Rules for what members of the WJCL need to be studying may be instituted.

Service

The Club was reminded of the existence of the monthly service contest, the recollection of which had up to that moment been relegated to Oblivion’s Outhouse. Members are encouraged to bring to the Club’s attention any promising Service Opportunities they become aware of.

Promo Video

The promotional video was discussed, in particular the background music question. It being presumed that the desired song (We Will Rock You) is copyrighted to the nines, EZ, our intrepid Tech Coordinator and the prime mover of the promo video project, has been given the task of researching copyright. It was proposed that if copyright laws were unfavorable, the copies of the promo video for handing out would be without Agitabimus Te (We Will Rock You). The song would remain, however, on the video playing at our conference table.

Moderator Donates Water Bottles

Before the Convention, Mrs. Van Hecke, one of our esteemed Moderators, offered to procure bottled water for the entire club. This promise was executed, and the water provided much needed hydration during Convention. It was the plan of the Club to reimburse her, but at the meeting she announced that the water was to be considered a donation and if we kept going on about reimbursement and such things she would jolly well reimburse us with a bat. Three cheers for Mrs. VH!

Letter from the Editor

The world has from the beginning nurtured great numbers of people who object to poetic license. Why this is, I do not exactly know, but my suspicion is that the whole issue is the fruit of bad digestion. These people, I have no doubt, spend their time eating dreadful indigestible pastries in a dreadful indigestible manner, which causes stress and anxiety. These in turn create peevishness, which is bottled and stored until the aforementioned people come in contact with poetic license, at which point it is released in frothy cataracts.

This behavior I denounce as foolish and infantile!

These people would be tempted to trouble the Secretary of the Latin Club with complaints about the poetic license occasionally apparent in the minutes, and would remind any who challenge their position of the Sacred Oath he swore upon his Installation into Office to adhere to truth in his minutes. To save the amiable Secretary from such scandalous impertinences I wish to take full responsibility for all poetic license found in the minutes, and I invite all who object to them to reread the beginning of this letter in which I give at some length my opinion of their good selves.

By-Laws

The club went over a few amendments drawn up by the Triumvirate with the intention of casting a vote to determine their acceptability; however, as the minutes ticked by and the club started proposing amendments to the amendments themselves, it was decided that the Triumvirate would modify the amendments and send them to the group via e-mail. They would then be voted on next meeting.

Moderator’s Report

Dr. Gotcher brought to the attention of the Club the possibility of Certamen with Brookfield Academy and Marquette, which possibility was greeted with enthusiastic applause by everyone. The Level 1 Team in particular began to exhibit subtle glints in their eyes. Mrs. VH, who witnessed the scene, later remarked, “For the first time in my life I actually felt sorry for Brookfield, the Level One’s eyes were so… glinty.”

The many and splendid awards won by the gallant toils of the Club were then distributed to the sound of thunderous applause.

I know this is a little tardy and I can't post pictures yet. We're all doing great and are very excited about our strong delegation. After competing as a "small school" in previous years, we discovered to our surprise that we now rank as a medium-sized school. We learned this when they announced us as the winner of this morning's spirit competition among the medium-sized schools.

Lots of pictures coming soon. We're heading off to certamen competitions (we're competing at levels I, II and IV) and the war machines contest in just a bit.

Certamen: T.G. was given the steering oar, and the game proceeded with much vim.

The teams (Secretarial, Vice-Presidential, and Presidential) were placed as follows:

Third Place - the Vice-Presidential team, with 50 points

Second Place - the Presidential team, with 75 points

First Place - the Secretarial team, with 105 points

Trireme building contest: The time allowed for each team to create their trireme was 30 minutes and the materials masking tape and popsicle sticks. At the end of the time allotment the judges conferred and delivered the following scores:

Third Place - the Vice Presidential team, with 7 points

Second Place - the Secretarial team, with 13 points

First Place - the Presidential team, with 15 points

There will be more on the triremes in the Art Column.

Business

Treasurer’s Report: The coffers contain $37.02

Moderators report: The contents of the report are as follows:

– List of members must be created.

– The dues have changed. It is now $2 for state dues, $2 for national dues, and $10 for the club as a whole.

– Convention information is now out on the web at www.wjcl.org.

– Prepared oratory. Prepared oratory is the one convention category that has not been entered by a member of the club, and if possible Dr. Gotcher would like someone to attempt it this year.

– This year’s theme is, The level of success is limited only by our imagination. It was immediately suggested that the symbol of Robinson Industries be put on this year’s door.

– A date is needed for the Saturnalia party. The triumvirate will deliberate with the moderators and announce their decision as soon as may be.

– Planning meeting. The November meeting will be the convention planning meeting.

– Everyone who is taking the National Latin Exam must be signed up by January.

President’s Report: A library of some 300 books [all of a classical nature] is in the possession of J.B. and L.Z. and is currently deposited at the Z’s house. If you are in need of a particular title or subject, e-mail Mrs. Z or go on the web site; the address of which will be sent out shortly.

Art Column

By the Editor

Whether you are for or against the idea of building competitions, there can by no disputing the fact that the products of Monday’s contest were very thought provoking and fraught with the psychology of the individual. The categories: Creativity, Authenticity and Aesthetic Appeal were personified in the predominant characteristics of the three triremes.

Aesthetic Appeal was given material shape in the trireme produced by the Vice-President’s team. Though lacking a few trireme-ish aspects, this piece was of pleasing form and clever construction.

Authenticity took shape in the hands of the team led by the Secretary. Unfortunately, this is all that can really be said in praise of a boat that looks like a cross between the Flying Dutchman and an over indulgence of the taping instinct.

Lastly, Creativity was personified by the trireme constructed by the President’s team.

This entries chief feature, its sail, was interesting in the extreme, and its value is in no way lessened by the information that the rest of it was constructed after the ten minute warning.

All in all it was most charming to watch the club’s artistic sensibilities take concrete form, and I look forward to having the pleasure repeated.

Art Column

By the Editor

The skits on the Thirteenth of September were all very unique in flavor. If they had anything in common it was their general tendency toward humor, but they were, on the whole, well executed.

As I have alluded to humor as a point of comparison for all the skits, I will evaluate them on that head.

The first to be performed that evening was by the Vice-President and her associates. Its humor was of a subtle type, with the exception, possibly, of Circe’s “valley girl” jive and the Boat.

The next, performed by the president’s team, was more lighthearted and will go down in history chiefly for its spruce military Odysseus, its British Elpenor, and the resemblance of the blind prophet to a fashion designer.

The skit directed by the Secretary was staged last. At this point I, the Editor, am somewhat at a loss; for while it pains me to speak ill of a colleague, I must be truthful. The skit was a vulgar affair, very American, decently historical, but stooping to such lows as referring to Poseidon, the Earth Shaker, as P-dog.

Latin Lives Newspaper

General Information

Latin
Lives is a small, online newspaper run entirely by high school students across the nation, and the paper publishes quarterly throughout the September-to-June
school year (October, December, February, and April.) A high school student in California revived the paper three years ago. It is a small paper that publishes bimonthly over the course of the school year—in October, December, February, and April—with many opportunities to become involved. Because the goal of the newspaper is to connect people’s lives through the Classics, a variety of Classical topics are covered in the newspaper. Currently, we are searching for editors, a tech. coordinator, as many contributing writers as possible, and subscribers.

The responsibilities of each staff position and application information follows as well as information about subscribing.

Editors will be responsible for proof-reading articles (about five per issue), soliciting article submissions from classmates, suggesting article topics, and occasionally writing articles.

Tech.
Coordinator:

The tech. coordinator will be responsible for building and maintaining a new Latin Lives website (i.e. posting new articles) as well as distributing the newspaper to subscribers.

To apply for the
position of tech. coordinator, please submit a list of your qualifications for the position (any previous tech. experience, etc.) and a list of previous websites you have built. In the list please include the URLs for any website(s) (including blogs) of yours that is currently accessible. Additionally, submit a brief essay 100-200 words explaining why you would like the position and what you could bring to Latin Lives.

NB: Any applicant not selected to be the tech. coordinator is welcome to later join the staff as a contributing writer.

Writers:

Any Latin student is encouraged to submit articles to Latin Lives. Because we publish only four times throughout the year, we do expect most contributing writers to submit an article for each edition of the paper.

If you would like to add your name to the list of official contributors, send David Davenport an e-mail with the required information listed above (name, school, etc.), and he will send you periodic e-mails listing possible article topics and informing you of the deadlines for submissions. Becoming a Latin Lives contributing writer is a great way to get your writing published online!

There is not a specific word limit, but, in general, a desirable length is between half-a-page and a page single spaced. Also, even though topic suggestions will be sent out, any Classical topic—ranging from a Latin club event to a Classical myth to even JFK’s use of Ciceronian rhetoric—is acceptable. Writers are encouraged to write about topics that interest them and those they think may interest others.

Any applicant who is not selected for other positions will have the opportunity to
become writers.

I wanted to learn about latin so to help my s.a.t. scores, due to the fact that Latin improves your vocabulary. Plus I enjoy roman and greek stuff, like gladiaters and mythology. Their cool. I’m glad I taking Latin and I hope I’d take it again next year, maybe even learn Greek someday.

Latin Club Meeting - September 2008

Last Night's Meeting

Last night's meeting was wonderful. We had a great crowd. The evening began with the prayer, "Veni, Sancte Spiritus." Next we had the song/round "Pauper Sum Ego," a student commercium from the middle ages. After that, Certamen, a game show type contest about Roman and Greek language, culture and history. Team C, captained by N.G., won.

Following that there was the presentation of the awards from the Wisconsin Junior Classical League convention in January. We won first place in Spirit for small schools. We also won first in the war machine contest, the men's costume contest, and the drawing contest. We won various individual ribbons for the twelve subject tests that the delegates participated in. It was a nice celebration of our accomplishments.

In the business part of the meeting we began with voting on amendments to the bylaws. The revised bylaws will be posted soon. Next, the president's report and valediction, the treasurer's report and the moderator's report.

Finally, we had the elections. After wonderful speeches--the best in club history--we elected the following: for the Triumvirate; M. B.--president, M. Z.--vice president, P. F.--Secretary/treasurer: for the non-executive officers; K. M.--historian, E.Z.--technology coordinator.

Finally, we had the cake prepared by K.M. in celebration of a wonderful year full of fun and accomplishments and in celebration of the new things to come under the new administration. And, as M.B. said in her speech (or something like it), Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!

Many thanks to all who made the Roman Holiday Party/Feast Day Celebration a great success - particularly Fabiola, Poseidon, Corvinus, Persephone and Philomena. Congratulations to Saints Sebastian and Daria for winning the costume contest and Fabiola for cooking the best dish (ham with a plum sauce). The skits were excellent and very entertaining. Special acting mentions should go to the gray sisters from team #2, "The Wind God", Fabiola, and Julius Caesar for their fine performances.

After all, if we do witness an increase in the number of masses offered partly or mostly in Latin over the next generation, the recovery of this beautiful and richly meaningful practice will surely be aided by the growing numbers of children — including many children of Catholic families — studying the Latin language today. Why the upsurge in interest? Turns out Arrius Potterus (as he is known in the new Latin translation of Rowling's first book) gets a good deal of the credit. (more)

[Editor's note: I am not hereby endorsing reading Rowling's work! Anyone in my family or who reads my blog knows of my reserve about the Harry Potter series. I also don't think that Hogwarts has a classical curriculum, even if they use a lot of Latin. In fact, I think many of the problems in the stories stem from an alienation of the wizarding educational system from both classical and religious thought--very similar to the problems that beset our own educational system.]

The October Latin club meeting will be held on October 16th at the Van Hecke's house from 6:30 to 8 pm. We're going to play Certamen for Roman history and Latin grammar, so your warned to study up on that, but don't stress over it. We're also doing a skit. Dead Language Latin Club
Minutes for September 11, 2007

The meeting was brought to order at 6:43 pm. Nate and Christina G, Lauren and Enan Z, Michelle B, Stephen Z and Kate M were present.

We prayed the Pater Noster. Then we sang Aufer Me Ad Areman, which was suppose to be "Take me out to the ball game" in Latin, but turned out to be "Take me to the gladiator arena."

Next we built and raced chariots; boys against girls. Even though the boys got over the finish line first *coughonfootcough*, the girls won, because of their superior design.

Last we held the business meeting. The President, Nate, gave his report and welcomed us with a hardy, "Welcome." He then told us about the Latin convention. We discussed that it would be awesome if we could get 10 or more people to go with our club. Next we talked about the future meetings and the December Party. The treasurer, Kate, then gave the report that we have the same amount of money as we did in May. Finally the meeting concluded with Mr. Gotcher giving the moderator's report. We discussed e-mails, the blog and meeting dates. We are also considering watching a Roman themed movie.

The meeting was brought to a close at 8:09 pm. Lauren provided the snack of cookies, dates, grape juice, and peanuts.

The pope encourages us to read classic authors

Following the advice of St. Basil the Great.

Finally, Basil was of course also concerned with that chosen portion of the People of God, the youth, society’s future. He addressed a Discourse to them on how to benefit from the pagan culture of that time.
He recognized with great balance and openness that examples of virtue can be found in classical Greek and Latin literature. Such examples of upright living can be helpful to young Christians in search of the truth and the correct way of living (cf. Ad Adolescentes 3).
Therefore, one must take from the texts by classical authors what is suitable and conforms with the truth: thus, with a critical and open approach - it is a question of true and proper “discernment”- young people grow in freedom.
With the famous image of bees that gather from flowers only what they need to make honey, Basil recommends: “Just as bees can take nectar from
flowers, unlike other animals which limit themselves to enjoying their scent and colour, so also from these writings… one can draw some benefit for the spirit.
We must use these books, following in all things the example of bees. They do not visit every flower without distinction, nor seek to remove all the nectar from the flowers on which they alight, but only draw from them what they need to make honey, and leave the rest. And if we are wise, we will take from those writings what is appropriate for us, and conform to the truth, ignoring the rest” (Ad Adolescentes 4).
Basil recommended above all that young people grow in virtue, in the right way of living: “While the other goods… pass from one to the other as in playing dice, virtue alone is an inalienable good and endures throughout life and after death” (Ad Adolescentes 5).
